Tanzania builds largest meat processing factory
Tanzania has started the construction of what is to become East and Central Africa’s largest meat processing factory. The new US $5.5 million meat processing plant will be able to process 14,000 cattle per day.
The new factory, dubbed the Tan Choice plant, will be ready to start production in September 2019. There is a great need for a plant like this in Tanzania. The East African country has one of the largest livestock populations on the continent, but not enough meat processing capacity, Africa Investor reports. Figures of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries show that there are 13.5 million head of cattle, 5.5 million goats, 3.6 million sheep, 0.4 million pigs and 23.2 million chickens.
The Tanzanian government wants to get more control over the local agro processing sector. Africa Investor reports that not long ago, the government seized and destroyed large batches “of toxic pork and meat that illegally entered the country, in addition to outdated milk, all of which posed a danger to the consumers or other Tanzanian citizens.”
