VW investing in new business model for Africa

The German car manufacturer is investing $50 million in car-sharing and ride-hailing concepts to enhance mobility in Rwanda.

VW’s ride-service Move already has 23,000 registered users in Kigali, of which 2,200 of them are active users.

Volkswagen Rwanda CEO, Michaella Rugwizangoga, says that also in Africa, there is a new range of customers who don’t want to have the burden of owning and taking care of a car.  “They want be able to drive in the car but they don’t want to worry about insurance, maintenance, fuelling the car etc, they want on demand just in time.”B

VW is giving its business model a two-year test run, with cars that are assembled at its new $20 million plant in the Rwandan capital.
