Chinese tourists: big numbers, big spendersClub China members in the travel industry will find it interesting to know that China currently accounts for nearly 1 in 10 tourists globally.

According to a BBC report, the number of Chinese tourists has grown massively in the last two decades. Projections are that the 100 million trips that the Chinese tourists take each year will double by 2020.

Chinese tourists are already the biggest spenders globally, paying more per trip than the Americans and Germans as well as even the Russians. In 2013, Chinese tourists spent over $100 billion (£59.5bn) and they travel to shop. Every 8 in 10 tourists view holidays as shopping trips; they are keen to leave China to find lower prices for luxury goods.

The growth of Chinese tourism offers an opportunity for other countries seeking to attract big spending visitors.
