New land reclamation projects in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is continuing to reclaim land from the sea. The city’s Development Bureau has approved six new land reclamation projects, that will add as much as 1,490 hectares of land to Hong Kong by 2030.

Over the years, Hong Kong has completed massive land reclamation projects. About a quarter of de city’s total developed area consists of land that was taken from the sea.

According to a Caixin report, Hong Kong’s latest plans involve creating a 1,000-hectare artificial island in the waters between Hong Kong Island and Lantau Island. Another project, off Lantau, was approved earlier and construction will begin soon. On a 121-hectare area, about 40,800 apartment units will be built, as well as 877,000 square meters of commercial space.
