China’s builds 407,594 new hotel rooms

China’s hotel construction pipeline continues to expand. In the first half of 2019, the number of new hotel projects was up by 7 per cent year-over-year. In total, construction companies are currently working on 2,174 hotel construction projects or 407,594 rooms.

The growth numbers of China’s hotel industry are all-time highs, amidst an economic slowdown, TravelDailyMedia reports.

The average size of pipeline projects is 198 rooms per project, the smallest size that LE has ever recorded. The decline is primarily due to the long-term shift of projects from luxury and upper-upscale projects to the upper-upscale and upscale segments, according to the current trend.

In the first half of 2019, China opened 413 new hotels/62,173 rooms with another 452 new hotels/69,110 rooms forecast to open by year-end. Guangzhou leads China’s pipeline with an all-time high project count of 140 projects with 27,945 rooms. Shanghai, Chengdu, Wuhan and Suzhou follow.
