Great future for three-star hotels in China

Hilton spots big opportunities in the three-star hotel market in China. The hotel chain plans to open no less than 400 new Hampton hotels in China’s first- and second-tier cities.

Great future for three-star hotels in China “If you look at China today, there are two groups of hotels,” said Jim Holthouser, executive VP of global brands for Hilton. “There are the 5-star-plus Western chains that are serving wealthy groups of travelers, and then you have the smaller domestic chains in the 1- and 2-star market—what we would call ‘economy’ in the U.S.”

The Hamptons are aimed at the growing and actively traveling middle class in China, estimated at over 1 billion people. For outbound travel, Hilton expects to see 200 million Chinese travel internationally. And when they do, Hilton wants them to be familiar with the Hampton brand so they stay at the brand, or other Hilton-branded hotels, elsewhere in the world.

Worldwide, Hampton has more than 1,900 properties comprising 195,000 rooms in 17 countries and territories. Hilton intends to build out its Hampton portfolio in China during the course of the next five to eight years. Hilton has 17,000 rooms operating in China, and another 50,000 rooms in the pipeline.
