Sustainable aviation has come a step closer. Global energy company Shell has decided to actively support the development of Europe’s first dedicated sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production plant.

Shell is following the lead of KLM, that agreed to support the development for a 10-year period by purchasing 75,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel a year.

The development of the new sustainable aviation fuel production plant in Delfzijl, The Netherlands, is led by SkyNRG, a global market leader for SAF and a long-term strategic partner of Shell Aviation. Shell is to offer its technical and commercial expertise to the development of the plant.

The production facility is on schedule for commissioning in 2022. At that time, it will be first commercial supplier of sustainable aviation fuel to the aviation market in Europe. AirportWorld reports that the plant will annually produce 100,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel, corresponding to a reduction in lifecycle CO2equivalent emissions of approximately 270,000 tonnes.
