In five years from now, Sub-Saharan Africa’s mobile phone market will have reached the 1 billion subscribers’ mark, up 200 million from the current figure. Research of Dataxis is showing the continent’s mobile phone market is showing growing at high pace.
The number of mobile subscribers will mainly be driven by the internet enabled SIMs. 3G and 4G subscribers will jump from 35% of the total mobile subscribers in 2017 to 57% in 2023. Industry experts expect the 3G market in Sub-Saharan Africa to remain the principal technology enabling mobile internet access. Nevertheless, 4G’s share will increase to reach almost 40% of Internet mobile SIMs.
Experts expect that the infrastructure development will continue, and that more African consumers will be able to afford 4G, thanks to a significant drop in mobile data prices that is expected in the upcoming years.
