CEO visit sparks speculations: Twitter to China | Biz weekly

What does it mean when the CEO of Twitter visits China and meets with government officials, academics and college students in Shanghai? The visit, reported by China Daily, has fuelled speculations that Twitter is planning to enter the Chinese market.

According to Twitter spokesmen, the visit of CEO Dick Costolo means nothing. According to their explanation the CEO aims for a better understanding of Chinese culture and the prosperous Chinese science and technology realms.

While Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, has publicly expressed his company's goal of entering China, Twitter's senior management has played down the likelihood of seeking a license to do business there. A spokesman for Twitter declined to disclose more details about Costolo's talks with Shanghai government officials. Twitter has denied the possibility of setting up a Chinese office in the near future.
