China’s costly business of marriage

Getting married in China has become expensive. In Beijing, the cost of marriage gifts rose more than 20-fold in just four years.

A study by the state-run People’s Daily newspaper found that a groom in Beijing now has to present his prospective in-laws with a 200,000 yuan (€27,500) cash gift and buy an apartment for his future wife to win their daughter’s hand in marriage, the study conducted.

BusinessInsider reports that the exchange of betrothal gifts has been part of Chinese wedding tradition since ancient times. The price of the betrothal gifts has gone up with the increasing shortage of women in recent years. This is particularly the case in the north, less so in the south. The cost of betrothal gifts in some southern cities has levelled and even started to fall compared with four years ago.
