Mobile payment M-Pesa now enters travel arena

Mobile money is making big steps on the African continent, with Safaricom’s payment service M-Pesa as a strong frontrunner. The Kenyan-based company is now taking M-Pesa into the travel arena, by teaming up with Travelport, a global travel reservation provider.

The two parties have agreed to integrate the M-Pesa payment service into the Travelport system. This offers customers of the travel company a new and simplified payment process for booking trips, hotel accommodation and car rental, using M-Pesa mobile for payment.

According to Safaricom, M-Pesa payments offer many benefits to the travel industry, such as increased efficiency and ease of doing business, reducing the time and effort it takes to make bookings and reservations.

Ventures Africa reports that travel agents can now to accept M-PESA as a cashless payment choice which means more potential customers can be easily reached. Earlier this year, M-Pesa partnered with Chinese e-commerce giant, Alibaba, to ease the flow of transactions for online shoppers in Kenya.
