African footwear is taking on world brandsAfrican shoe companies and their brands are attracting fans both on the continent and in the western world. More than a handful of African brands are currently successful in selling quality shoes with one of a kind, fresh designs, competing with the top brands of the world.

Ghanaweb compiled a list of the nine most successful brands of the continent. TawiaDesigns is a Ghanaian-American shoe brand, with products produced in Kenya, Ghana and Morocco. It prides itself in providing comfortable handmade footwear ranging from sandals, boots, lace-ups and custom sneakers.

The Lagos-based company Thando’s produces compact ballerina flats. Thando’s crowd-sources their designs, while supporting African women in the fabric trade and underserved African artists. Nio Far, founded by Senegalese designer Milcos Badji, is a brand of sleek sneakers made out of mudcloth fabric.
Other brands on the list and discussed on Ghanaweb are Buqisi-Ruux, Ohema Ohene (Ghana/UK), SAWA (Algeria), MONAA (Ghana/Germany), Oliberté (Ethiopia) and ENZI (Ethiopia).
