Telcom Kenya and Loon LLC will start tests with high-altitude balloons to provide rural parts of the country with internet access.
According to Telcom Kenya, the collaboration is intended to provide high-quality, reliable and affordable data offerings to Kenyans in under- and un-served locations across the country.
BizTechAfrica reports that Loon’s solution works by beaming Internet connectivity from ground stations to a balloon 20 kilometers overhead. From there, the signal can be sent across multiple balloons, creating a network of floating cell towers that deliver connectivity directly to a users’ devices below.
The advantage of this technology is the large coverage area of each balloon - roughly 30 times greater than a ground-based system.
