The citizens of oil-rich Gabon are consuming large quantities of champagne. Consumption has reached such high levels, that the Central African country is now one of the world’s largest markets for this sparkling wine.
A recent report by the Interprofessional Committee of wine placed the country of 1.6 million inhabitants in the top 10 of the world’s largest consumers. AfricaNews reports that demand in Gabon is exceptionally high from May to August, due to the large number marriages, Baptism ceremonies and other occasions.
Gabon is one of the biggest producers of oil in Africa. The abundant petroleum and foreign private investment have helped make Gabon one of the most prosperous countries on the continent, with fourth highest GDP per capita (PPP) after Mauritius, Equatorial Guinea and Seychelles) in the region. Because of inequality in income distribution, a significant proportion of the population remains poor.
