Beijing’s Capital International Airport has reached an important milestone. The airport has handled over 100 million passengers in one year. It is the first Chinese airport, and the second in the world, to pass the 100 million-passenger mark.
The airport has been the world's second-busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic since 2010. In 1978, the airport handled just over 1 million passengers. Since that year, Beijing’s Capital International Airport saw an average annual growth rate in passenger traffic of 12.1 percent per year.
China Daily reports that cargo traffic has also shown dramatic growth numbers. The airport handled 2 million metric tons of cargo in 2018. In 1978, the number was 34,000 tons. The airport’s growth has been a strong economic factor for the Beijing region. According to the airport, it created a total of 611,000 jobs from 2013 to 2017.
