Explore the most popular running routes in Hong Kong

With its crowded streets, steep terrain and air pollution Hong Kong doesn't seem to be an appealing city to run in. But somehow Hong Kong has a vibrant running community. You can spot runners everywhere you go and the Hong Kong Marathon is the most popular sports event of the city. Here are two favourite places to run in Hong Kong.

Victoria Peak Run

A man is running in Victoria Park in Hong KongStart and finish: Peak Tram Station
Distance: appr. 7 km / 4.3 miles

This route includes running in the mountains and woods of Hong Kong and is a bit challenging. The run rewards you with spectacular views of Aberdeen on one side of the Hong Kong island, and the skyline along the opposite side of the island. So you have a good excuse to pause anytime you want to enjoy the view and to catch your breath.

Travel to Peak Tram Station and buy a roundtrip ticket. The 125-year old tram will bring you straight uphill to the start of your run: Victoria Gap. When you are at Victoria Gap leave Peak Station, turn right and take Lugard Road. This narrow road leads directly along the side of the station and will take you counter-clockwise around Victoria peak.

The first km you'll go slightly uphill, than you'll go downhill for 3 km and uphill again for the final 3 km. After 2 km Lugard Road runs into Harlech Road. Make a left turn above the valley for the Pok Fu Lam Reservoir and continue following the Hong Kong Trail. The trail will run into Pok Fu Lam Reservoir Road where you turn left and continue running uphill straight back to the Peak Tram Station.

Victoria Park

For an easy run you can head to Hong Kong's largest park: Victoria Park, located in the Causeway Bay district. It has a jogging paved path cutting through wooded areas and passes various fitness stations. The path is 600m long and accurately marked every 100 metres. Victoria Park is also a popular Tai Chi hotspot.

Hong Kong Marathon

The Hong Marathon is annually held in February or March. Although high humidity and a difficult course make it a tough race to finish, it's a very popular race. The event attracts 72,000 entrants and thousands of spectators. The race starts at Nathan Road and takes runners past some of Hong Kong's famous highlights. You can also sign up for a half marathon and 10 km race. For more information visit www.hkmarathon.com.
