Air France-KLM claims leadership in SAF adoption

Air France-KLM reinforces its commitment to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), aiming for a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions per passenger/km by 2030. The group, a major SAF user globally, emphasizes fleet renewal, increased SAF incorporation, and strategic partnerships.

According to a report in Biodiesel Magazine, the group doubled its SAF incorporation in 2023, securing future supplies through global partnerships and investments – thus emerging as a SAF frontrunner.

According to the report the group's multifaceted approach involves awareness campaigns, strategic investments, and engaging customers through innovative SAF programs, contributing significantly to global SAF production. The report by Biodiesel Magazine describes the sourcing policy of the airline group as follows:

  • Sustainable aviation fuel is currently made from used cooking oils, waste or agricultural and forestry residues. In the future, sustainable synthetic aviation fuel will also be available, made from hydrogen and carbon captured from the atmosphere.
  • Air France-KLM adheres to a strict sourcing policy, committing to purchasing second generation SAF that does not compete with food or feed, are RSB or ISCC+ certified for their sustainability, and is not produced from palm oil. Compared to conventional fuel, Air France-KLM’s SAF achieve a CO₂ emissions reduction of up to 75 percent over the entire fuel lifecycle.
