Prediction: better year for aviation due to sustainability progress

The aviation industry enjoys its most optimistic economic outlook for some years. According to Aircraft Interiors, one reason for optimism is the progress that is being made in sustainability. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production will reach 1 billion litres in 2023, says the report.

One of the predictions of Aircraft Interiors for 2023 is that sustainability in aviation will take off more this year than ever before. “More and more aviation organisations are making sustainability pledges, and sustainable progress is being made in both traditional and new forms of aircraft propulsion. The uptake in use of SAF is growing to power traditional airframes”, the magazine reports.

Current estimates expect SAF to account for 65% of the mitigation needed for industry net-zero CO2 emissions, requiring a production capacity of 450 billion litres annually in 2050. Aircraft Interiors points out that IATA highlights that the total commercial flights using SAF has now exceeded 450,000; over 50 airlines are using SAF in some form.
