Unconventional sustainability: jet fuel derived from human poop
In a quirky move, a UK-based aviation company explores the sustainability of jet fuel made from human feces. Despite challenges in SAF production, including cost and scalability issues, using human waste offers a unique solution, potentially reducing carbon footprints significantly.
SAF doesn’t come cheap, Finshots reports. Until production scales up, SAF could cost two to four times more than the historical average cost of regular jet fuel.
That’s why researchers are constantly looking for new ways and sources to make SAF with minimal roadblocks. Firefly Green Fuels, a UK-based aviation company, recently came up with a way to process human poop into SAF.
While the idea sounds novel, challenges persist, Finshots states. Human poop may not be a panacea for SAF, as scalability issues and contrail concerns loom. Nevertheless, it poses an interesting prospect in the broader quest for sustainable aviation practices.
