If you have ever travelled to Japan for business, you must have noticed that finding (free) Wi-Fi spots in Japanese cities is tough. Until now. Business travellers can register for a Wi-Fi card that offers free Wi-Fi coverage via 45,000 hot spots in the eastern Japan area.

Wi-Fi in Japan? Passport pleaseThe new program is launched by NTT, the largest telecom company in Japan. The hot spots it gives access to are located in cities like Tokyo, Hakone, Mt. Fuji, Yokohama, Nagano, Nikko, Kusatsu, Tohoku, Hokkaido and Fukushima.

You will need your passport to get this service. When you arrive at a Japanese airport, present your passport and register for the NTT Wi-Fi. You can also ‘book’ in advance, before you board your flight, by downloading the iOS or Android version of the NAVITIME for Japan Travel app. This way you will be able to obtain an ID and password beforehand.

The app also offers a nice touch: an augmented reality mode that shows a Street View-style image of the location where an available Wi-Fi hotspot is located.
