Sweden’s airports soon to be ready to receive the first electric aircraft. Swedavia, the company that manages the airports, has launched plans to equip all ten of its gateways to handle the first commercial electrified flight by 2025.

AirportWorld reports that a testing venue for electric aircraft is planned to be put into operation during the autumn at Åre Östersund Airport. Construction plans have been made for aircraft parking stands, infrastructure for charging aircraft and the power supply needed at the airport.

Test flights of electric aircraft and drones will take place in the airspace between Åre Östersund and Røros Airport in Norway. The tests will be carried out in collaboration with a number of partners both in Sweden and Norway under the framework for the EU project Green Flyway.

Swedavia has actively been encouraging the development and use of sustainable bio jet fuel for a number of years. Ten of Swedavia’s airports will have zero emissions of fossil carbon dioxide from their own operations by the end of 2020.
